Hazel was a strong Christian woman, who with her husband Martin, raised their own children as well as being foster parents. She and her husband were active with and fostered 26 children through the Lutheran Children's Bureau of Lehigh County. Hazel graduated from Honesdale High School in 1932 and Wayne Commercial School in 1933. She supported many community and school activities, and in politics was a loyal Republican who took an active interest in public affairs. She and her husband lived in Bethlehem until they retired to Port Charlotte, FL in 1977. They spent the summers in Hawley, PA but have many close friends in Florida. Hazel moved back to Bethlehem, PA after her husband, Martin, passed away. She is a member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Center Valley. Hazel was active throughout her life, always ready to try new things. The last several years she enjoyed summer visits to the Jersey shore, dog shows, kite flying, auctions, Kutztown fairs, fireworks displays, local winery tastings, the annual peach festival at her church, and summer visits to the Hawley cabin that she and her husband built in 1952. Hazel was a wonderful storyteller and family historian. She was active in researching her family's genealogy and traced her Pennsylvania ancestors to the early 1800's migrations from Connecticut and New York. Her grandfather was a Civil War veteran and she had two ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. Her stories instilled an appreciation for the lives and accomplishments of past generations. She recounted many stories about her family life before the industrial, medical, and technological advances of the last century. She enjoyed staying in contact with many relatives, ensuring the family stories and history was passed on to new generations.
