Printed in 1900. It is from a sketch about Lawrence's son George W. Tisdel "Five brothers of the AnTisdel (as the name formerly was spelled) were noted swordsmen of Scotland, from which land they were driven during religious persecution. They settled in Connecticut, and the name remained AnTisdel until Lawrence Tisdel was born in Connecticut and followed the hatter's trade there. On April 5, 1822, Lawrence came west settling in Salem (now Lake) Township, Wayne County, and erected a building for a hat factory, but altered his plans and devoted the balance of his life to agricultural pursuits. He was a man of quiet disposition, prominent in his community because of his sterling worth and wisdom, and faithful in his attendance in the Methodist Church. I do recall that I found a Mary Abbe (daughter of Samuel Abbe and Temperance Lincoln) who was born on 9 Feb. 1774 in Mansfield (Tolland Co) Connecticut. The interesting thing about her was that (1) Lawrence Antisdel's mother came from Mansfield, Connecticut and (2) Mary had a brother (Shadrach Abbe) who died in Otsego, NY, in 1819. The other interesting thing is (if I recall correctly) - I also came across some sort of permission granted to a Samuel Abbe (Abbey - ?) to go to Otsego, NY around the time Lawrence Antisdel moved there as well. The record for Samuel indicates he may have died sometime after 1794 in Otswego, NY. (Could Mary have moved in with her brother Shadrach?) Although there is another Mary Abbey (daughter of Samuel Abbey and Miriam Hall) who was born January 3, 1782, I do not think she is as promising because records for her show two different birth places (Mansfield, Connecticut or Schenectady, NY), and other records for her show she married, had no children, and died on Aug 13, 1804 (about 22 years of age). I also recall from family lore that Lawrence Antisdel may have been a loyalist - who moved to the NY area, and changed his name following the Revolutionary War.....I wonder if Samuel Abbey (Abbe) did the same (????) Do you know anything about the "Loyalist" records from the Revolutionary War? Parents: Lawrence ANTISDEL and Mary ABBEY. Spouse: Hannah Church JONES.
