CUTTER36 was born on
Mar 2, 1728/29 in Woburn, Massachusetts. He died in Jan 1755 in
Lexington, Massachusetts. Parents: John
CUTTER and Rachel POWERS. Spouse: Elizabeth HASTINGS. Joseph CUTTER36 was born on May 13, 1752 in Lexington, Massachusetts. He died on Jun 25, 1840 in Jaffery, New Hampshire. Joseph and Rachel Cutter had six sons and three daughters. Five of the sons raised large families. One had eight children, two of them had nine, and two had ten children. The five sons settled in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Nehemia Cutter one of the six sons married three times, without issue. Nehemia was a physician in Pepperell, Massachusetts and died 15 Mar 1859. Joseph Cutter was a farmer by vocation, and an executor of his father's will in 1771. Not long after his father's death, he removed from new Ipswich to Jaffrey, where the cellar of his dwelling, near the spacious mansion of his son Joseph Cutter, is still to be seen. During the first year of the revolutionary contest he was once in active service with the provincial forces before Boston, for which duty he was honored with a pension from the government. He was of medium height, rather stout in body, and quick and agile in his movements. He was forcible in expression, and a man of few words. He held a captaincy in the State militia, and received a commission of Justice of the Peace, but never served the office, being disqualified by a very limited education. His wife, Rachel, was amiable and industrious, and possessed an excellent judgment. She had a particular fondness for family antiquities. He removed with his father, first to Waltham, second to Shrewsbury, and thence to New Ipswich. He came to Jaffrey probably as early as 1773, and settled on lot 17, range 3, now (1928) owned by Martin P. Garfield. He soon after sold this place to Joseph Bates and took up land on the foothills of Monadnock where, near the site of his dwelling, the spacious mansion now known as the Ark remains a monument to his descendents. He was a Revolutionary solider. By his industry and shrewdness he acquired a competence and became the largest landed proprietor in town. He gave a farm to each of his sons; and after disposing of much of his real estate, lived near the Meeting House in Jaffrey Centre Village in the house where his brother Benjamin had previously kept tavern, now owned by Endicott Marean. Joseph and Rachel Cutter had ten children, all of abounding vigor and enterprise. Six settled in Jaffrey and had large families. The five brothers, Joseph, John, Daniel, Joel, and Abel, settled near each other in school district No. 11, and their children filled to overflowing the little red school house still standing near Melville Academy in Jaffrey Center. In 1822, forty-six years after their marriage, the only death which had occurred in the family was that of the first wife of the son Nehemiah, not of the Cutter blood. At this time a reunion of the family was held at which there were present, Joseph Cutter, his wife and his grandchildren, twenty of each sex; three sons-in-law; and six daughters-in-law; total number sixty-two. He was a cooper by trade, and was admitted as a Freeman in 1641. This privilege was earnestly desired by every man, and all freemen of that period were required to be orthodox members of the Church, twenty years old, and worth two hundred pounds. In 1643 he became a member of the Artillery Company. About 1644 he married Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. Her tombstone is one of the oldest now standing in the ancient burying-ground of Old Cambridge, Mass.: "Here lyes ye body of Elizabeth Cutter, wife to Richard Cutter, aged about 42 years; died March 5, 1661-2." His monumental stones are in the western part of the yard, and the inscription is perfectly legible: "Here lyes ye body of Richard Cutter, aged about 72 years, died ye 16 of June, 1693." In his will he mentions daughters, and the five sons, Samuel, William, Ephraim, Gershom and Nathaniel of the (3d) generation.
