John Niles, founder of the family in this country and ancestor of all the colonial Niles families, was born in Wales, according to tradition in the family, in 1603. He came to this country and was in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as early as 1634. In 1638 or 1639 he removed to Braintree, an adjacent town, and was admitted a freeman May 26, 1647. His wife Jane died May 15, 1659, and his second wife Hannah died January 31, 1702-03. He died February 8, 1693-94, aged about ninety-one years. Children, born in Braintree:
Hannah, February 16, 1636-37;
John, March 4, 1638-39;
Joseph, August 15, 1640;
Nathaniel, August 16, 1642, settled at Kingstown, Rhode Island;
Samuel,was born at Braintree, May 12, 1644. He married, perhaps second, April 20, 1680, Mary Belcher, widow. He was a lieutenant at Braintree in 1697.
Increase, December 16, 1646;
Benjamin, March 12, 1650-51.
By second wife: Isaac, April 2, 1658.

John Niles, of Dorchester and Braintree, Mass., ancestor of all of this surname in the northern part of the United States, as far as the name has been traced, was born, probably in England, about 1603, and died at Braintree 8 Feb. 1693/4, the entry of his death in the town records calling him "Old John Niles" and giving his age as "about 91." He married first, probably in 1636, Jane Reed of Braintree, who died 15 May 1654; and secondly Hannah (___) Ames, widow of William Ames. She survived John Niles, and died 31 Jan. 1703. John Niles was at Dorchester in Sept. 1634, and settled at Braintree in 1636.

John went to Block Island perhaps, but before remarrying by wife Hannah, had, probably Isaac, b. 2 April 1658. It is not certain that he went to Block Island as that John who lived there may have been the son of this John, which died at Braintree, 8 February, 1694, aged about 91 years and his widow(Hannah) died 31 January, 1703.
