Carl Flegal (cflegal@msn.com) offered via email 18 Jun 1999 re:
ancestry of Edward back to Charlemagne:

[1128]

The best reference that I have is Gary Boyd Roberts, "The New
England Ancestry of H.R.H. The Princess of Wales," NEHGR, 136,
85-103, 1982: "The second royal descent, compiled by H. J.
Young from F. N. MacNamara, Memorials of the Danvers Family (of
Dauntsey & Culworth) (London, 1895), William F. Carter, The
Quatremains of Oxfordshire (Oxford, 1936), volume 8 of the
Moriarty manuscript collection and a few other sources, is from
Hugh Capet, King of France, d. 996, through counts of Hainault,

Roucy, Montdidier, and Clermont, and the Clare, Wake, Duston,
Grey of Rotherfield, Breton, Quatremain, Bruley, Danvers,
Langston and Giffard families." "These kinships are explored in
"The Mowbray Connection," 7: 162-166, 174, 175."

[1129]

Weiss gives the ancestry of Adelaide de Clermont.

[1130]

James A. Rasmussen, "Edward Raynesford of Boston," NEHGR,
225-315, July, 1985 gives the ancestry through Alice Danvers,
her father Sir William Danvers of Colthrop, her grandmother Joan
Bruley. "Further particulars on Alice's ancestry may be found in

Samuel Barfield, Thatchem, Berks, and its Manors (Oxford, 1901),
edited by James Parker."

[1131]

Details of these ancestries are found on the internet:

[1132]

One ancestry of Joan Bruley is given at
(www.my-ged.com/db/page/scokin/04297). This fits with my
reference. I have not entered this ancestry into my computer
and can not send you a GEDCOM

myself. I'll be looking for it myself.

Paul Bailey McBride carries the ancestry of Thomas de Grey
(-1295) on back with many references,

Apparently many New England immigrants descend from Joan Bruley
including Ann Mowbray Hutchinson. Joan Bruley's ancestry also
appears to be correct at

Richard RAYNESFORD1 died about Feb 17, 1603/4 in Epping, co. Essex, England. Richard resided at Gyles, in Epping, Co. Essex, England, and
possessed

Daventry and Northants. He was third son of his father and was
buried

17 Feb 1603/4 at Epping where he held the Manor of Gyles; he
also held other

manors. Epping is about a mile SW of North Weald Basset and is
about 18

miles NNE of the center of London.

Richard Raynsford, of Epping co. Essex, where he was buried 17
Feb.

1603/4 (microfilm of parish register transcript at Essex Record

Office, no. T/R 57). Philip Morant's History adn Antiquitites of
the

County of Essex (1767), 2:k50 says the manor of Giles in Epping
passed

to Antony Browne in 1566, then was held by Richard Raynsford,
Esq.,

"who dyed 14 Feb. 1603." His inquisition post mortem, held at

Stratford, 3 July 1604, states he died 14 February 1604 holding
the

Manor of Gilles, lands at Epping Bury and Epping [faded word] in
co.

Essex, lands at Sabredyworth, and in the manors of Pisho Bury,
[faded

word] Bury and Shinglehall, co. Herts., and that his son and
heir was

Robert Raynsford, more than twenty-one (PRO 665/59). The
Victoria

County History of Essex, 4:295, notes that Richard Rainsford of

Epping, who died in 1604, left L5 to found a charity in the
parish of

North Weald Bassett, the income to be applied for relief of the
poor.

He was twice married, first to Anne Meade, the only wife
mentioned

in the pedigrees, and second at St. Gregory-by-St.-Paul, London,
6

July 1585, as "Richard Rainfford of Epping in Essex, gent.," to

Elizabeth Revell (parish register, no MS 10,231 at Guildhall
Library,

London). The first marriage is probably that marriage recorded
at

North Weald Bassett on 8 November 1559 between Richard Raynsford
and

Anne Godden [sic]. Anne is called a daughter of Thomas Meade of

Berdon, co Essex, in the pedigrees, but her father has not yet
been

sufficiently identified among several of the name. The will of
Joan

Mead of Berden, widow, dated 28 August 1557 (Essex REcord Office
no.

B/ABa 1/103 Reel 1, xerox copy provided by /archivist) names
sons

John, Edward, Thomas and Richard Mead, son Richard Bennett,
mentions

unnamed wives of all sons, names daughters Joan, wife of Thomas

Pelham: Elizabeth Wright, and Agnes Goddaye, and leaves unnamed

children of Agnes cash legacies at their day of marriage. The
will of

Edward Mead of Berdon, dated 10 Sept 1577 and proved 19 November

following (PCC 44 Daughtry) names his ten children, brothers
Thomas

and Richard Mead, sister Jane Pelham but not sister Agnes/Anne,
who

was perhaps then dead.

On 4 December 1558 Robert Godday of Sabrythesworth, alias
Groves,

co Hertfordshire, was licensed to alienate the same and land in

Sherying, co. Essex, to his son Thomas Godday, and on 12 June
1560

Thomas Gooddaye and Joan his wife of Sabrigeworth, co.
Hertfordshire,

were licensed to alienate lands in Shering, co. Essex (Calendar
of

Patent Rolls: Elizabeth I, 10:136, 363). The Hertfordshire "Feet
of

Fine," Trinity Term 8 Elizabeth I 1566 (The Herts Genealogist &

Antiquary 1 [1895]: 345) show "Three messuages and lands in

Sabrygeworth, Tho. Goddaye & Benedict Averyll; Rich. Raynsforde
&

Agnes his wife." Much later, at Hilary Term 34 Elizabeth I,
1591/2,

there ws an action regarding messuage and lands in North Mymmes,

Herts., between Henry Knowlys, gent. vs. Rich. Raynesford,
gent.,

Elizabeth his wife and Elizabeth Marvyn, widow (ibid., 3 [1898]:
97).

George Baker, History of Northamptonshire (1822-1830), 1:348,
states

that in 1602 Richard Symes alienated his manor of Drayton in

Northamptonshire to Richard Raynesford, Esq., and Robert his son
and

heir apparent in fee, "which Robert, in 6 Jac. (1608) his father
being

then dead," conveyed to Richard Farmer, Gent., and Edward FArmer
his

second son.

The will fo Richard Raynsford of Epping, Gentleman, was made 22

August 1599 and proved 5 June 1604 (PCC 59 Harte). By it he left
wife

Elizabeth various personal and household goods she was to
forfeit if

she remarried. He left L500 apiece to "my sonnes two daughters
Marye

and Jane" when they married or at age twenty-one; L25 to be paid

within three years to "Phillippa Marshe the child of my late
daughter

deceased," and the balance of his estate to son Robert Raynsford
who

was also nominated executor. His "loving nephew Richard Bugge,

gentleman and my loving brother-in-law Richard Meade, yeoman"
were to

be supervisors and each was to receive a gold ring worth forty

shillings when three months. The will was witnessed by John
Milles,

Edward Stauemont and Roger Numan. Parents: George RAYNSFORD and Katherine TAVERNER.

Spouse: Anne MEADE. Richard RAYNESFORD and Anne MEADE were married on Nov 8, 1559 in North Weald Bassett, England. Children were: Robert Esq RAYNESFORD, Phillipa RAYNESFORD, George RAYNESFORD, John RAYNESFORD, Judith RAYNESFORD, Susan RAYNESFORD, Jane RAYNESFORD.

Richard Sir RAYNESFORD. Parents: Robert Esq RAYNESFORD and Mary KIRTON.

Robert RAYNESFORD. Parents: Robert Esq RAYNESFORD and Mary KIRTON.

Robert Esq RAYNESFORD1 was born about Feb 7, 1566/67 in Epping, co. Essex, England. He was christened on Feb 7, 1566/67 in Epping, co. Essex, England. He died on Apr 15, 1629 in Staverton, co. Northampton, England. Robert was "aged 21, 1604"; was baptised at Epping, Co. Essex,

9 January 1565/6; is 6th child of his father; is "of Staverton."
The pedigree

states that he sold Drayton in 1608. He made his will 10 October
1628.

Staverton is nearly 10 miles west of Northampton and perhaps 15
miles SE of

Coventry. A Drayton House shows as an "antiquity" on modern maps
about 29

miles NE of Staverton (but is not known to be the property sold
by Robert)

According to the Centennial History of Boston, 1880, He was an

elder in the church and the head of a respectable family. He was

disarmed by the government for being supportive of Anne
Hutchinson.

The Boston "Book of Possessions" compiled about 1645 contains
the

names of the owners of land at the time. It was published by the

City, being the second report of the Record Commissioners.
"Edward

Rainsford" appears on the list.

There are no other Rainsford's listed. He was a selectman of
Boston

from 1962-69.

His name "Edward Ransford" appears on the first Covenant dated
at

Charlestown, August 27, 1630 which reads as follows: In the Name
of

the Lord Jesus Christ, and in obedience to His Holy will and
Divine

Ordinance: Wee whose names are hereunder written, being by His
most

wise and good Providence brought together into this part of
America in

the Bay of Massachusetts, and desirous to unite ourselves into
one

Congregation, or Church, under the Lord Jesus Christ our Head,
in such

sort as becometh all those whom He hath Redeemed and Sanctified
to

Himselfe, doe hereby solemnly and religiously (as in His most
holy

Proesance) Promisse and bind our selves to walke in all our
wayes

according to the Rule of the Gospell, and in all sincere
Conformity to

His holy Ordinances, and in mutuall love and respect each to
other, so

neer as God shall give us grace.

This indicates that he was early a church member at Boston. A

separate entry dated the 15th of the 10th month, 1633 (that
would be

December, I believe). "Elisabeth Ransford, ye wife of our
brother

Edward Ransford" was admitted as a member of the Boston Church.

Edward Rainsford was also one of the Founders of Old South
Church

in 1669. The comment to the list in the Memorial History of
Boston is

that "Many or most of them already belonged to the First Church,
but

none except substantial men would be named in such an
enterprise.

Most of them resided at what was then the South End. Our Essex
and

Boylston streets were the limit of the town, except such few
houses as

were on the

high-road to Roxbury i.e. Washington Street.

An Ann Rainsford married Samuel Hough, of one of the most
prominent

Boston families about 1675 and had two sons who died before
middle

age.

According to the Genealogical Dictionary: "Edward Rainsford,
often

Ransford, Boston, 1630, came in the fleet with Winthrop by
Hutchinson

I. 260, called brother of chief justice Rainsford, which so
strongly

do I suspect to be erroneous that gladly would conjecture be
offered

of its possible cause, were it in my power, was freeman 17 April
1637,

a deacon

and ruling elder of the first church and one of the founders of
the

third, indignant at the artifices practised to bring Davenport
from

New Haven, died 16 Aug. 1680. He by first wife had Mary and
Josiah,

b.1, both baptised 17 June 1632; the mother died the same month
and

Josiah died in September following and by second wife Elizabeth
had

John, born 30 June, baptised 27 July 1634; Jonathan, baptised 23
Oct.

1636; Ranis, 4, baptised 10 June 1638; Nathan, 24 July, baptised
1

Aug. 1641, died before his father; David, baptised 1 Sept. 1644,
died

28 Nov. 1691; Solomon; Edward; Elizabeth; and Ann, born 1 Feb.
1652;

all except the first son named in the will, made 3, probated 28
Aug.

1680, though Jonathan and Nathan are mentioned as dead yet the
latter

probably without issue, as his share is given to Edward and the

children of the other are named, Jonathan,

Dorothy, and Mary. His widow Elizabeth, who died 16 Nov. 1688
aged

81, is named executrix and he calls his daughter Mary Parcyfull,

meaning possibly Percival, but where the husband was is unknown.

Ranis Belcher, wife of Josiah, Elizabeth Greenough, second wife
of

William and Ann Hough, wife of Samuel of Boston. Edward, Boston,
a

fisherman, came in the Abigail from London, 1635, aged 26, whom
I dare

not deny, though I must not assert, to be the same as
preceeding."

According to NEHGS NEXIS, Vol. XII, No. 5, p. 156, Edward
Raynsford is

a royal descendant, citing Register 139 (1985): 296-301.
