This branch of the Rogers family claims descent from John Rogers, the Christian martyr. The immediate ancestor was Jeremiah Rogers (1633-1676) who settled first in Dorchester and then Lancaster, Mass.

Genealogy of the Chisholm Family written by William Chisholm in 1914, and tracing back the family history to AD 1254.

==================================================================
JEREMIAH1 ROGERS, whose parents are not known, was one of the first settlers of Lancaster, Mass. He married Mehitabel Pierce, daughter of John and Mary Pierce. She was born probably in Dorchester, and probably about 1630, as she had three children to whom her father left legacies in his will in 1661. When Indians, in Feb. 1676, burned all the buildings in Lancaster except the church and one house, all the inhabitants who were not killed or captured fled to Dorchester. Among the refugees were Jeremiah and his family, and he died there Sept. 26, 1676, probably in the small pox epidemic which had broken out. Lancaster records say Abiah Rogers, widow of Jeremiah, died at Dorchester, Jan. 10, 1678. She and two of her daughters, Abigail and Bathsheba, died of small pox the same month. As the birth and death records of their children in Lancaster all read child "of Jeremiah Rogers and Abiah his wife," that must have been another name for Mehitabel.

Jeremiah Rogers of Salem, wheelwright, Ichabod of Lancaster, cordwainer, and Jehoshaphat of Topsfield, tailor, conveyed their interest in lands of their father, Jeremiah Rogers of Lancaster, to Edward Phelps, May 12, 1710.

Samuel Trescott and Margaret, his wife, one of the daughters of Jeremiah Rogers, late of Lancaster, deceased, convey to Edward Phelps, land purchased of Abiah Warren of Boston, widow, one other daughter of said Jeremiah Rogers, May 21, 1710 (Middlesex Co. Deeds, vol. 15, p. 261).

Hannah FORD was born in Windham, CT alsoon 9/9/1723 and died in 1778 in Luzerne County, PA while fleeing the Indians during the Wyoming Massacre.

Josiah Rogers settled with his family at Plymouth, PA in 1776. He is found in the tax lists of 1776, 1777 and 1778. He was a
member of Captain John Franklin's company of Militia at the post of Wyoming in April-May 1780. After the massacre,
with his family he fled, taking his course down the Susquehanna two days journey, then across the mountains towards
Northampton or Berks.

His wife, Hannah Ford, died escaping the Wyoming massacre. A broken piece of board that lay across the path was used
for a spade, and in a hollow where a fallen tree had upturned it's roots, a shallow grave was dug, and her remains were
buried with all the care and respect their distressed condition would allow. On the board placed over the grave, this
inscription was written with a piece of charcoal: 'Here rest the remains of HANNAH, wife of Josiah Rogers, who died
while fleeing from the Indians after the massacre at Wyoming'. After an exile of some months Josiah and the remainder
of his family returned to Plymouth.

In the Spring of 1779, the next year after the massacre, Josiah Rogers said "I will lay my bones in Wyoming". Indians
had not been seen in the valley for some time and Cpt. James Bidlack with Mr. Rogers, started on horseback to go to
Plymouth to see, if they could move their families. After crossing the river, they continued on the road until they came
near Toby's creek, where an Indian appeared and rushing towards them from behind the willows would have seized
their bridles. He was followed by others. But, despite his age, he didn't give up. They were unarmed but wheeled their
horses and made toward the block house on the bank of the river. Captain Bidlack's saddle broke and he fell to the
ground. He was taken prisoner. Josiah's horse, who he said "didn't like the smell of an Indian", flew on. He felt bullets
whizzing by, but felt no wound.

His descendant, Dr. Joel Rogers told the following, "The garrison at the block-house, on hearing the firing, advanced to
the rescue. The cannon at the Fort in Wilkesbarre, of which the Indians were terribly afraid, was brought to bear, and
discharged towards them, arresting their progress. My great-grandfather wore a tight-bodied coat, and an over coat of
the same cloth, made of wool-coloured, one part butternut, the other blue, homespun woven, and dressed...Coming to a
new country, he expected to preserve them unsullied for many years, when alas! on arriving at the block-house, he
found the rascals had cut two holes through his over coat, passing near the small of his back on one side, coming out
eight inches from it on the other, with a rent of a fingers' breadth in his tight-bodied coat. For many years he was
compelled to wear, when abroad and at meeting, the evidence of Indian skill in shooting at a mark."

He lived to be 96 years of age and died in 1815 fulfilling his wish "to lay his bones at Wyoming"

Josiah ROGERS was born on Dec 14, 1760 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut. He died on Aug 14, 1841. from a genforum posting by Eric Howard ehwd@kutath.phast.umass.edu on 9/26/1998 The June 1, 1840 census of Windham twp., Luzerne County had a 79 year old Josiah Rogers.....Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Service with their names, ages and place of residence as returned by the Marshals of the Several Judicial Districts
Under the Act for Taking the Sixth Census in 1840.
Washington; Printed by: Blair and Rives 1841

Per his own declaration to the court on 9/4/1832, backed up by many declarations of acquaintences regarding his reputation,

He resided in Canterbury, CT in 1779 and in May of that year he enlisted as a private for the term of three months into the service of the State of Connecticut under the command of Captain Joseph Burgess. It was a single militia company, mosted of them drafted for three month's service and mustered in the town of Canterbury. They marched to Chatham on the North River, where they remained for a month and a half on guard, then marched to Groton, CT to remain at the fort until his term of service expired. He was dismissed with the rest of his company and returned home without any written documents of discharge. The officer commanding the fort during his service was Col. Ledyard.

He again enlisted in March of 1782 as a private for the term of one year in to the service of the Connecticut State militia under the command of Captain Daniel Allen, who had enlisted a company of volunteers in the towns of Ashford and Canterbury, CT.

He then enlisted as a substitiute for Deacon Jacob Winters and David Dodge, the older men being then formed in to ???? which evolve to send one man cash, either as a volunteer, or as a substitiute. The two individuals named paid Josiah Rogers five dollars continental money as a bounty for his enlisting for ???? to which they belonged.... From the aforesaid towns the company marched to Horse Neck, but being himself sick with the Small Pox, he did not march with them, but joined the company at Horse Neck about one month later, where he found the company attached to a regiment under the command of Col. Samuel Canfield..... making a regiment of four companies. He remained in service at Horse Neck until the expiration of his term, the first day of April, 1783, when he was discharged without any written documents. The whole regiment was discharged at the same time, peace having been previously made.

The applicant was in no battle during this term, but was employed in small scouting parties along the lines against the "refugees" and what was then called the "Cow Boys"......

He further states that he was born in the aforesaid town of Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, on the 4th of December, 1760, and, has seen nearly thirty years ago, saw this time of his birth thus recorded in the register of the Clerk of that town that he was residing in said town when he enlisted under Captain Allen, and continued to reside there until the year 1809 when he moved to the State of Pennsylvania in the place where he now resides. [dick's note:Windham, Wyoming County, PA].
