scattering occurrences of the name in various

London parishes of that period. The name is found in variations
of Skeffe, Skyffe, Skaffe and other

intermediate spellings but the name of James is absent in all

"On a grimmer note, two gravestones in Chilmark portray a partial skull biting down on crossed bones, perhaps to remind that death is the destruction of the body. One belongs to Mary Mayhew, wife of Matthew Mayhew, who died in 1783, at the age of 56, after bearing 12 children. I shuddered when I discovered that she had the last one when she was 47 years old. The other stone stands over the grave of her daughter Martha, who died at
23 in 1775."
