Lawrence SOUTHWICK32 was born about 1585 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. He died on May 10, 1659 in Shelter Island, NY. Lawrence Southwick was an early American glassmaker. He took the Freeman's Oath and was a member of the body politic, became a member of the Church and thereby fulfulled the requirement to own land. His roots were in Lancastershire, England. He moved to Salem in 1629 and brought his wife and children where they lived in peace until 1658 when it was discovered that most of his family practiced the Quaker faith. They were subsequently imprisoned, whipped, and fined. Lawrence and Cassandra were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and under "payne of death" should they return. Lawrence's will was dated 10 July 1659 and allowed 1660.
John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker descendant, wrote a poem "Ode to Cassandra" about the persecution of the daughter of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick. It was actually about Provided Southwick. When she was arrested for practicing her Quaker religion, the court attempted to sell her into slavery and to have her shipped to Barbados or Virginia along with her brother for the same offense. There were no ship's captains to be found who would carry out the orders.
