While researching your civil war ancestry, do not forget the importance of the Reconstruction amendments. Many of our ancestors fought to ensure freedom and equality for all. In particular, the 14th Amendment guarantee's citizenship for all persons regardless of race, both born or naturalized in the United States; that no state would be allowed to abridge the "privileges and immunities" of citizens; that no person was allowed to be deprived of life, liberty,or property without "due process of law."; and that no person could be denied "equal protection of the laws."
