Glosenger, in his lifetime a well known general merchant of Hemlolck Hollow, was throughout the greater part of his active business life identified with the agricultural and commercial interests of Wayne County. Of excellent business abilities anad broad resources, he attained a prominent place among the substantial citizens of his part in the county. He won success by his well directed, energetic efforts, and the prosperity that came to him was certainly deserved. A native of Wayne county, Mr. Glosenger was born in Salem Township, March 21, 1824, a son of John and Mary (Brown) Glosenger, the former a native of Connecticut, who in his twentieth year came to Wayne County and took up residence in Salem Township. In their family were the following children: Cynthia Ann, now a resident of Hemlock Hollow R.C., the subject of this sketch William (deceased) Amanda, who is living in Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania On attaining his majority, R. C. Glosenger left home and began the struggle of life for himself as a carpenter. He was married November 19, 1843, to Miss Mary Tisdale, of Salem Township, and they became the parents of nine children, whose names and dates of birth are as follows: Leonora, August 4, 1845 Charles B., March 4, 1848 Franklin P. (deceased), September 13, 1855 Selina Elecia, November 10, 1858 Emogene, April 23, 1861 Mary Amanda, April 20, 1863 John C., September 3, 1865 Irene, May 24, 1868 Anna B. (no date given) Irene is now the wife of Joseph Moore of McKean County, Penn Anna B. is the wife of John Hilts, a merchant of Dover, N.J., by whom she has two children, Carl Glosenger and Russel. Soon after his marriage, our Subject purchased a farm in Salem Township, which he successfully operated for fifteen years. By the government he was appointed provost marshall in 1861, under Col. Ewell, and acceptably served in that capacity until the close of the war. He then purchased another farm, which he conducted for three years, but believing other business would be more profitable, he removed to Hemlock Hollow, where he opened both a hotel and a general store. In 1875, however, he again became a farmer, but at the end of two years, he removed to Scranton, Penn., where for the same length of time he was proprietor of the "White Horse Hotel." Returning to his native county, he resumed agricultural pursiuts, which he continued to follow until the death of his wife, which occurred September 29, 1881. Two years later he sold his property and returned to Hemlock Hollow where he was successfully engaged in merchandising, enjoying a liberal patronage. For his second wife, Mr. Glosenger married Miss Christine Pelton of Lackawaxen Township, Pike county, a daughter of James L. and Almeda (Harvey) Pelton, and one child blessed the union, Ethel Almeda, born March 20, 1886. Mr. Pelton was a native of New York City, and at the age of ten years moved to Pike County, Penn., eight years later becoming a resident of the city of Lackawaxen, where he engaged in the hotel business for some time. After selling his property he was employed by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Co., for eight years, and for the remained of his life, engaged in farming. He died October 21, 1882, and his beloved wife passed away May 21, 1884, honored and respected by all who knew them. In politics, Mr. Glosenger was always a staunch Democrat, and ever took an active interest in public affairs. He most acceptable served as collector for Salem Township for two years, and for many years was one of the school directors in paupack Township. He was a member of the Salem Branch of Odd Fellows for over forty years. To the day of his death, he stood a strong man, strong to plan and to perform, strong in his credit and good name and a worth example for the rising generation." Note: The 1850 census index of Salem, Wayne county, PA lists Robert as "Glossinger" because the census taker's penmanship makes the "e" look like an "i". The 1860 census lists Robert as "Glosenger". His will follows and lists three different spellings. In the August 17th, 1899 newspaper, The Honesdale Citizen, there is a short "obituary" as follows: - Robert C. Glosenger A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in Hillsboro First Baptist Church for Robert L. Glosenger, who died Aug. 17 at age 80. Mr. Glosenger was born June 6, 1920, in Honesdale, Pa. He served in the merchant marine during World War II. He moved to Portland in 1947 and later lived in Hillsboro and Forest Grove. In 1967, he graduated from Portland State University. He worked briefly for United Airlines, then was district office manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber until 1958, owned Liberty Tire Store in St. Helens, and then owned Sir Loin's Restaurant in Hillsboro from 1972 until about 1977. He managed several restaurants, including a Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and was supervisor for 16 Plaid Pantry Stores, until retiring in 1985. He was a member of the church, was elected to the St. Helens City Council in 1965, appointed to the Columbia County Board of Commissioners in 1967, appointed by Gov. Tom McCall to the Governor's State Health Planning Commission and served on the Columbia-Willamette Air Pollution Authority and the Associated Counties forestry and health committees. In 1971, he married Mabel Henshaw Schaecher. Survivors include his wife; sons, Eric and Robert J.; daughter, Telka R. Petersen; stepson, Gregory Schaecher and Daniel Schaecher; stepdaughter, Teresa Glosenger; sister, Rosalie Clavez; brothers, Tisdel, Gerald, Bruce and Leonard; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Fir Lawn Cemetery in Hillsboro. The family suggests remembrances to the memorial fund of his church. Arrangements are by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home. Parents: Robert C. From the Honesdale Citizen January 4, 1872 : - Mr. John Glossinger, of Salem, met with an accident near Hawley, on the morning of the 23rd, which resulted in his death. He was on his way to the above place with a large basket of poultry and eggs, riding upon a train on the Pa. Coal Co's road, and standing upon the bumpers, with his basket on top of the car. A sudden jerking of the train threw him off and he fell with his head between the bumpers. The cars at that moment came together again with great force and his head was crushed in an instant. He was about 75 years of age, and a highly respected citizen of the community in which he lived.
